Once again, greetings to everyone. I hope that you are in good health and are ready to gnaw the granite of science (meaning to expand your vocabulary). Without further ado, let’s begin.

Пе́рвым на о́череди – игра́ не сто́ит свеч. Своему́ происхожде́нию выраже́ние обя́зано игре́ в ка́рты, а означа́ет, что ста́вки в игре́ столь малы́, что вы́игрыш не оку́пит да́же свеч, потра́ченных на освеще́ние в проце́ссе игры́. Сего́дня э́то выраже́ние дово́льно распространено́ и означа́ет, что уси́лия не опра́вдывают результа́т. Наприме́р:

First in the line – “the game is not worth the candles”. The expression takes its origins from the card game, and it means that the stakes are so small that the gain does not pay even the candles used for the lighting during the game. Today this expression is quite common and means that the effort does not justify the result. For example:

По́сле приобрете́ния жилья́ за рубежо́м мно́гие россия́не, поня́в, что игра́ не сто́ила свеч, ча́сто реша́ют сра́зу же распроща́ться со свое́й со́бственностью и, жела́тельно, без ощути́мых поте́рь.

Following the acquisition of property abroad, many Russians have realized that the game was not worth the candles, and often decide to immediately say goodbye to their property, and preferably without considerable loss.

И́ли наоборо́т:

Or vice versa:

Рабо́та с э́тим материа́лом име́ет свои́ осо́бенности, но игра́ сто́ит свеч.

Working with this material has its own difficulties, but the game is worth the candles.

Т.е. несмотря́ на не́которые осо́бенности, кото́рые усложня́ют проце́сс, материа́л име́ет доста́точно преиму́ществ, что́бы по́лностью покры́ть недоста́тки.

I.e. despite some features which complicate the process, the material has sufficient advantages to completely cover the imperfections.

За сим, перехо́дим к сле́дующему выраже́нию, встреча́йте – цветёт и па́хнет. Вопреки́ пе́рвому впечатле́нию, к цвета́м э́та фра́за име́ет лишь части́чное отноше́ние. Ча́ще всего́ её мо́жно слы́шать как характери́стику дово́льного свое́й жи́знью челове́ка.

After that, let’s move to the next expression, meet – “blooms and smells”. Contrary to the first impression, the phrase has very little to do with flowers. Most often it can be heard as a description of a person who is happy with his/her life.

– Как Да́ша? Я сто лет её не ви́дела.
– Цветёт и па́хнет. Они́ с му́жем неда́вно отме́тили 10 лет со дня сва́дьбы и до сих пор без ума́ друг от дру́га.

– How is Dasha? I haven’t seen her in ages.
– She blooms and smells. She and her husband recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of the wedding day and are still crazy about each other.

Без ума́ друг от дру́га зна́чит, что они́ безу́мно влюблены́ друг в дру́га. Всем бы так, пра́вда? И́ли хотя́ бы вот так:

“Mad about each other” means that they are madly in love with each other. Everybody should have that, right? Or at least that:

– Ну как у нас дела́?
– В шокола́де! Всё рабо́тает на ура́ и прое́кт гото́в к за́пуску.

– So how are we doing?
– We’re in chocolate! Everything works perfectly, and the project is ready to be launched.

И́ли:

Or:

Всё в ажу́ре! Мы рули́м!

Everything is sorted! We rule!

Мы рули́м происхо́дит не от ру́сского рули́ть (т.е. быть за рулём маши́ны), а от англи́йского “rule” (пра́вить, управля́ть), но в ру́сском вариа́нте означа́ет быть са́мым-са́мым: са́мым интере́сным, са́мым привлека́тельным и т.п.

“Мы рулим” does not come from Russian “to steer” (i.e. to drive the car), but from the English “to rule” (govern, manage), but in the Russian version it means to be the most-most: the most interesting, most attractive, etc.
