Это было давно и неправда

In today’s episode of “Very Much Russian podcast” we’ll learn a few informal Russian phrases that can make your Russian sound like you’ve been speaking it for years. Let’s begin!

Приве́т, друзья́!

Hello friends!

Когда́-то я говори́ла то́лько на одно́м языке́ – ру́сском. Но э́то бы́ло давно́ и непра́вда. Cегодня я с бо́льшим и́ли ме́ньшим успе́хом говорю́ на четырёх языка́х и продолжа́ю их учи́ть. Ведь изуче́ние языка́ – э́то проце́сс длино́ю в жизнь. Вы согла́сны?

Once I spoke only one language – Russian. But it was a long time ago and is not true. Today I speak four languages, with more or less success, and continue to learn them. Because learning a language is a process that lasts a lifetime. Do you agree?

Тогда́ приглаша́ю Ваc присоедини́ться ко мне и вы́учить ещё не́сколько о́чень ру́сских фраз! 🙂

Then I invite you to join me and learn some more very Russian phrases! 🙂

Э́то бы́ло давно́ и непра́вда – дово́льно распространённое выраже́ние, кото́рое ча́ще мо́жно слы́шать в неформа́льной обстано́вке. Э́то бы́ло давно́ – поня́тно, но почему́ же непра́вда? Потому́ что за э́то вре́мя пра́вда измени́лась. Сего́дняшняя пра́вда совсе́м друга́я, чем та, кото́рая была́ давно́. Приме́ры:

“It was a long time ago and is not true” is a pretty common expression which can often be heard in an informal atmosphere. “It was a long time ago” – that’s clear, but why “not true”? Because during all this time the truth has changed. Today’s truth is completely different than the one that was long time ago. Examples:

– Я по́мню, когда́ мы учи́лись в шко́ле, он был пе́рвым хулига́ном.
Э́то бы́ло давно́ и непра́вда, сего́дня он поря́дочный и о́чень уважа́емый в свои́х круга́х челове́к.

– I remember, when we were in school, he was the first hooligan.
– It was a long time and is not true, today he is a decent and very respected in his circles person.

Ещё одно́ выраже́ние, кото́рое я терпе́ть ненави́жу слы́шать – как то́лько, так сра́зу… Стоп, я сказа́ла терпе́ть ненави́жу? Вот так и вкра́дываются в на́ши вы́пуски незаплани́рованные го́сти. 🙂

Another expression that I “hate to tolerate hearing” is “as soon as – right away” … Stop, did I say “hate to tolerate”? That’s how unplanned guests slip into our episodes. 🙂

Но, всё по-поря́дку.

But, everything in its order:

– Ты когда́ вы́несешь му́сор?
Как то́лько, так сра́зу.

– When are you going to take out the garbage?
– As soon as, right away.

– Когда́ ты почи́нишь кран? Он всё вре́мя течёт.
Как то́лько, так сра́зу.

– When are you going to fix the tap? It leaks non-stop.
– As soon as – right away.

Как ви́дно из приме́ров, выраже́ние как то́лько, так сра́зу по бо́льшей ча́сти испо́льзуется ру́сскими, что́бы уйти́ от отве́та на вопро́с “Когда́?”. Хотя́ быва́ет, что его́ мо́жно услы́шать и как вполне́ резо́нный отве́т. Наприме́р:

As we can see from the examples, the expression “as soon as – right away” is mostly used by the Russians to get away from the answer to the question “When?”. Although sometimes it happens that it can be heard as a completely reasonable answer as well. For example:

Russian Pod 101

– Ты позвони́шь мне, когда́ вопро́с реши́тся?
Да, как то́лько, так сра́зу.

– Will you call me when the question is resolved?
– Yes, as soon as – right away.

Пое́хали да́льше… Вы наверняка́ зна́ете выраже́ние терпе́ть не могу́. Наприме́р:

Moving forward… You probably know the expression “I can not stand”. For example:

Терпе́ть не могу́ совреме́нные ру́сские телевизио́нные сериа́лы.

I can’t stand modern Russian television series.

Терпе́ть ненави́жу – э́то его́ изменённый чи́сто разгово́рный вариа́нт. Э́то когда́ вы не про́сто что́-то не мо́жете терпе́ть, а все́ми фи́брами души́ не выно́сите. Наприме́р:

“Hate to tolerate” is its changed purely conversational version. This is when you not only can’t stand something, you hate it with all the fibers of your soul. For example:

Терпе́ть ненави́жу, когда́ кто-то гро́мко ча́вкает!

I hate it when somebody champs loudly!

Все́ми фи́брами души́ зна́чит о́чень си́льно. Все́ми фи́брами мо́жно люби́ть, ненави́деть, хоте́ть, жела́ть и т.п. Приме́ры:

“With all the fibers of the soul” means very much. “With all the fibers” you can love, hate, want, desire, etc. Examples:

Я тебя́ обожа́ю все́ми фи́брами души́!

I adore you with all the fibers of my soul!

Я все́ми фи́брами души́ хочу́ поскоре́е верну́ться домо́й.

With all the fibers of my soul I want to go home as soon as possible.

Ну что, пожа́луй, хва́тит на сего́дня. Все́ми фи́брами свое́й необъя́тной души́ жела́ю вам отли́чного настрое́ния и бо́дрости ду́ха! До ско́рого!

Well, perhaps, enough for today. With all the fibers of my immense soul, I wish you to be in a great mood and have your spirit energized! See you later!

      Hello Kantilal K. Ahire.

With all my respect, your comments and expectations from a free blog founded by an individual are the weirdest I ever received.

I would really appreciate you understanding the purpose of this website and not asking for the things I can’t do for you.

      Best regards.
