Насолить

The main character of today’s episode is salt. Learn a couple of Russian superstitions and idioms where the salt is involved.

Всем приве́т!

Hello everybody!

Мо́жно ли испо́ртить жизнь со́лью Да! – ска́жете вы, е́сли вы медици́нский рабо́тник. 🙂

Is it possible to spoil life with salt? Yes! – you will say, if you are a medical worker. 🙂

Но я не об э́том. Отло́жим в сто́рону чрезме́рное употребле́ние со́ли и его́ после́дствия для здоро́вья, и вернёмся немно́го наза́д… лет э́дак на не́сколько со́тен.

But I’m not talking about that. Let’s put aside the excessive consumption of salt and its effects on health, and return a little back … for a few hundreds of years.

В старину́ соль всегда́ цени́лась о́чень до́рого, на вес зо́лота. Неудиви́тельно, что наро́дных приме́т и погово́рок, где фигури́рует соль, невероя́тное коли́чество. Суеве́рные лю́ди до сих пор ве́рят в ма́ссу из них. Наприме́р, счита́ется, что просы́пать соль – э́то к ссо́ре. И́ли друга́я приме́та – е́сли еда́ пересо́лена, то гото́вивший её влюблён.

In the old days the salt was always valued very expensive, worth one’s weight in gold. It’s no wonder that the number of people’s superstitions and sayings where salt is involved is incredible. Superstitious people still believe in a lot of them. For example, it is believed that spilling the salt leads to a quarrel. Or another superstition – if the food is too salty, then the one who cooked it is in love.

Не со́лоно хлеба́вши – э́тот фразеологи́зм означа́ет “оста́ться ни с чем”, т.е. как бы пое́сть (похлеба́ть) пре́сной еды́, что, согласи́тесь, не о́чень вку́сно.

“Не солоно хлебавши” (haven’t eaten anything salty) – this praseological unit means “to remain with nothing”, i.e. sort of eating (suping) unsalty food which, as you can agree with me, is not very tasty.

Пуд со́ли вме́сте съесть – зна́чит до́лго и, как пра́вило, хорошо́ знать челове́ка. Наприме́р:

“Пуд соли вместе съесть” (to eat a pood of salt together) – means to know a person for a long time and, as a rule, very well. For example:

Он хоро́ший па́рень, я вам то́чно говорю́. Мы с ним пуд со́ли вме́сте съе́ли.

He’s a good guy, I’m telling you for sure. We ate a pood of salt together.

At the time when people believed in spells… they still believe, of course, but I mean a much larger scale of the phenomenon than it is in our days … so, at the time when people were massively believing in spells, if one needed to do something bad to somebody else, then he could sneak into his food some salt spelled for damage. I.e. the salt on which a witch has cast a spell, and the use of which in food can lead to various negative consequences with health and not only health. Our today’s expression “насолить” comes from here.

Сейча́с мы употребля́ем э́то сло́во да́же не заду́мываясь о его́ исто́ках, насто́лько пло́тно оно́ въелось в созна́ние люде́й. Типи́чные приме́ры:

Now we use this word without even thinking about its origins, it is so densely embedded in the minds of people. Typical examples:

Он то́лько и ждёт слу́чая, что́бы насоли́ть тебе́.

He is only waiting for an opportunity to annoy to you.

Russian Pod 101

Она́ с удово́льствием насоли́ла бы тебе́ при пе́рвой возмо́жности.

She would do a bad turn to you with pleasure at the first opportunity.

Как насоли́ть надое́дливому сосе́ду?

How to annoy the annoying neighbor?

Сейча́с, коне́чно, соль сто́ит копе́йки. И отноше́ние к ней, само́ собо́й, измени́лось. А приме́ты и погово́рки оста́лись. Е́сли в ва́шей культу́ре есть каки́е-то интере́сны фа́кты, свя́занные с со́лью, я бы с ра́достью о них узна́ла. Пиши́те в коммента́риях и́ли на страни́це в Facebook-е.

Now, of course, the salt costs a penny. And the attitude towards it, of course, has changed. But the superstitions and sayings remain. If in your culture there are some interesting facts related to salt, I would gladly learn about them. Write in the comments or on the Facebook page.

А на сего́дня всё. Хлеб да соль вам! – как говори́ли в старину́ на Ру́си. Уда́чи и до ско́рой встре́чи!

And that’s it for today. Bread and salt to you! – as they used to say in old times in Russia. Good luck and see you soon!
