Париться

You are probably familiar with the Russian bath-house. We go there to “париться”, i.e. to sweat out at high temperature. But Russian word “париться” means much more than that. Learn about it from today’s episode of Very Much Russian podcast!

Всем приве́т.

Hello everybody.

Have you ever been to a Russian bathhouse? Or at least in Finnish or Turkish one? Or at least in an infrared sauna? If so, you probably know the concept of “париться” (to steam out). Despite the fact that it comes from the word “пар” (steam), Russians apply it to all the baths and saunas without exception, because today it brings more associations not with the steam, but with the process of sweating.

Одна́ко э́то ещё не всё. Разгово́рный язы́к ча́сто расширя́ет обы́чные значе́ния слов, как и произошло́ со сло́вом па́риться. Послу́шаем приме́ры:

However, this is not all. Spoken language often expands the usual meanings of words, so it happened to the word “па́риться” too. Let’s hear some examples:

Не па́рься, я всё сде́лаю.

Don’t worry, I’ll do it.

Что ты меня́ па́ришь?

What the heck are you telling me here?

Я запа́рилась объясня́ть вам ка́ждый раз одно́ и то же…

I’m tired to explain to you every time the same thing …

Запа́рил меня́ э́тот компью́тер, всё вре́мя виси́т.

I’m tired of this computer, it’s hanging all the time.

В ка́ждом из перечи́сленных слу́чаев на́ше сего́дняшнее сло́во несёт свой смысл. Рассмо́трим все по-отде́льности.

In each of these cases, our today’s word carries different meaning. Let’s look at each of them all separately.

Не па́рься – т.е. переста́нь волнова́ться, ду́мать о чём-то, му́читься и́ли изводи́ться. В да́нном слу́чае па́риться – означа́ет “о чём-то пережива́ть”.

“Не парься”. – i.e. stop worrying, stop thinking about something, struggle or exhaust yourself. In this case, “париться” means “to be concerned or worried about something”.

Что ты меня́ па́ришь? – заче́м ты надоеда́ешь мне свои́ми глу́пыми расска́зами и́ли враньём? Заче́м ты расска́зываешь мне э́ту чушь? Вот ещё приме́р с э́тим же значе́нием:

“Что ты меня паришь?” – why do you bother me with your stupid stories or lies? Why are you telling me this nonsense? Here is another example with the same meaning:

Russian Pod 101

Он три часа́ меня́ па́рил о том, как хороша́ его́ проду́кция и каки́е они́ потенциа́льно чуде́сные партнёры.

He was telling me for three hours about how good his product is and what a potentially wonderful partner they are.

Я запа́рилась (и́ли я запа́рился – для мужчи́ны) – я уста́л, мне надоело. Ещё приме́ры:

“Я запарилась” (or “я запарился” – for a man) – I’m tired (of something). More examples:

Как я запа́рилась сего́дня на рабо́те!

I got so tired at work today!

Они́ запа́рились ждать и ушли́.

They got tired waiting and left.

Запа́рил – зна́чит “утоми́л, надоел”.

“Запа́рил” means “got somebody exhausted, tired”.

Да вы запа́рили уже́, ско́лько мо́жно одно́ и то же перетира́ть?

You’ve got me tired already, how much longer can you talk about the same thing?

Во всех перечи́сленных слу́чаях, па́рить – э́то сленг. Употребля́ть его́ в бо́лее форма́льных ситуа́циях не рекоменду́ется.

In all these cases, “парить” is slang. Using it in more formal situations is not recommended.

Вот ещё вам сло́во на сего́дня: перетира́ть – зна́чит “обсужда́ть”, э́то то́же разгово́рный сленг.

Here is another word for you today: “перетирать” (to grind) means “to discuss”, this is also spoken slang.

Не волну́йтесь, мы перетрём с ни́ми э́тот вопро́с и всё устака́ним.

Not to worry, we will talk about it with them and settle everything.

Мы уже́ сто раз перетира́ли э́тот вопро́с.

We have already discussed this question a hundred times.

И ещё одно́ сло́во: устака́нить – т.е. “привести́ в поря́док, устрани́ть разногла́сия”.

And one more word: “устаканить” – i.e. “to settle, iron out the differences”.

Всё, на сего́дня, я ду́маю, доста́точно. Не па́рьтесь по пустяка́м! Всем до ско́рой встре́чи.

Well, for today, I think, is enough. Do not worry about trifles! See you all soon.
