Имейте совесть!

How to appeal to people's conscience in Russian

Hi everyone! Today we will learn to appeal to people’s conscience in Russian. If you feel that your kindness is being misused, or you want to make someone to behave oneself, or you want to shame somebody, the expressions of this episode of the podcast will come quite in handy.

И сно́ва здра́вствуйте!

And greetings to you again!

Есть у меня́ оди́н знако́мый, кото́рому всё вре́мя ка́жется, что окружа́ющие злоупотребля́ют его́ доброто́й. И э́то, наве́рное, действи́тельно так – он оди́н из тех люде́й, кото́рый всегда́ прихо́дит на по́мощь.

I have a friend who always thinks that others abuse his kindness. And that’s probably true, he’s one of those people who always comes to the rescue.

Тем не ме́нее, он не перестаёт возмуща́ться и причита́ть по э́тому по́воду. Име́йте со́весть!, – восклица́ет он, а сам в э́то вре́мя уже́ пыта́ется прики́нуть, как реши́ть свежепоставленную пе́ред ним пробле́му.

Nevertheless, he does not cease to resent and wail about this. “Have a heart!” – he exclaims, but at the same time he is already trying to figure out how to solve a freshly appeared in front of him your problem.

Е́сли и у вас возни́кла необходи́мость воззва́ть к со́вести окружа́ющих вас люде́й, то сказа́ть Име́йте со́весть! – соверше́нно прили́чный спо́соб сде́лать э́то о́чень по-ру́сски.

If you also have a need to appeal to the conscience of those around you, then saying “Имейте совесть!” is a very decent way to do it in a very Russian way.

Я, само́ собо́й, не оста́влю вас без приме́ров:

I, of course, will not leave you without examples:

Име́йте со́весть! Како́й приме́р вы подаёте де́тям? Как вам не сты́дно!

Have you no shame? What example do you give to the children? Shame on you!

Граждане, име́йте со́весть! Не наруша́йте поря́док!

People, have you no shame? Keep the order!

Девчо́нки, име́йте со́весть, оста́вьте мне кусо́к то́рта! Вы же сейча́с всё сожрёте!

Girls, have a heart, leave me a piece of cake! You’re gonna eat everything now!

Не́сколько поясне́ний к приме́рам:

A few explanations to the examples:

  • “Сожрете” comes from the word “сожрать” (to gobble up), i.e. “to eat”. In general, it is a rather rough form to express the idea of the process of eating, but you can hear it quite often in informal situations.
  • “Как вам не стыдно!” (Do you have no shame?) – this expression is also worth remembering. Most often it is used by adults talking to children or teenagers, wishing to shame them.

Вот и всё на сего́дня. Жела́ю вам ми́ра с со́бственной со́вестью и с окружа́ющими. Сча́стливо!

That’s it for today. I wish you peace with your own conscience and with others. Bye-bye!
