Фигово

Today we continue the series dedicated to the Russian word фиг and its dericatives. Join me for this new episode to learn what “фигово” means in Russian.

Всем приве́т!

Hello!

Сего́дня мы продолжа́ем на́шу фи́говую се́рию… в смы́сле, се́рию подкастов о ру́сском сло́ве фиг и его́ произво́дных. На о́череди сло́во фиго́во, что зна́чит “пло́хо”. Наприме́р:

Today we continue our “фиговая” series… meaning, a series of podcasts about the Russian word “фиг” and its derivatives. Today is the turn of the word “фигово”, which means “bad”. For example:

Фиго́вый како́й-то звук у э́тих коло́нок.

The sound of these speakers is somewhat lousy.

Дела́ у него́ шли фиго́во – жена́ его́ бро́сила, би́знес едва́ своди́л концы́ с конца́ми, он мно́го пил и почти́ переста́л обща́ться с друзья́ми.

He was not doing well: his wife left him, the business was barely making ends meet, he drank a lot and almost stopped talking with his friends.

Фиго́во – э́то наре́чие, фи́говый – прилага́тельное.

“Фигово” is an adverb, “фиговый” is an adjective.

Коло́нки – э́то таки́е коробки́, кото́рые подключа́ются к любо́му музыка́льному прои́грывателю и из них раздаётся звук.

“Колонки” (speakers) are those boxes that connect to any music player and produce the sound.

Своди́ть концы́ с конца́ми – расхо́жее выраже́ние. В основно́м его́ испо́льзуют говоря́ о фина́нсовом положе́нии дел кого́-ли́бо. Е́сли концы́ с конца́ми схо́дятся, то де́нег хвата́ет, е́сли нет – зна́чит расхо́ды у на́шего персона́жа превыша́ют его́ дохо́ды.

“Making ends meet” is a common expression. Mostly it is used to talk about the financial situation of someone. If the ends meet, then there is enough money, if not – that means our character’s expenses exceed his income.

Дабы́ смягчи́ть негати́вный смысл сло́ва, мо́жно доба́вить к нему́ так называ́емый уменьши́тельно-ласка́тельный су́ффикс. В на́шем слу́чае мы полу́чим: фиго́венько и фиго́венький.

To mitigate the negative meaning of the word, you can add to it the so-called diminutive-hypocoristic suffix. In our case we get: “фиговенько” and “фиговенький”.

Мне ка́жется, я его́ неча́янно оби́дела… Фиго́венько вы́шло…

I think I unintentionally offended him… Not good…

Ситуа́ция на фи́рме фиго́венькая – они́ уже́ сократи́ли треть шта́та и едва́ вы́платили оста́вшимся зарпла́ту за после́дний ме́сяц, да и то с заде́ржкой.

The situation at the firm is not good: they have already reduced one third of the staff and barely paid the salary for the last month to the remaining personnel, even more, with a delay.

Вы не загрусти́ли? Не бу́ду бо́льше о фиго́вом. В сле́дующий раз обеща́ю что-нибу́дь хоро́шее и прия́тное. 🙂

Aren’t you getting a little bit sad? I will not talk about “фиговое” anymore. Next time I promise something good and pleasant. 🙂

А на сего́дня всё. Забу́дьте про фиго́вое, по́мните об офиге́нном! Уда́чи и до ско́рой встре́чи!

And that’s it for today. Forget about “фиговое”, remember about “офиге́нное“! Good luck and see you soon!
