Смотрит в книгу, видит фигу

Hi everyone! This episode will teach you 3 colloquial Russian expressions: смотрит в книгу, видит фигу, ни пройти, ни проехать, and в час по чайной ложке. Don’t miss it!

Приве́т друзья́!

Hello friends!

Everyone one of us, probably, found yourself in a situation when something took your mind so much so even while reading a book or scrolling Facebook you kept thinking about that and didn’t register completely in your mind nothing or what your read or saw. In the cases like that, the phrase “looks into a book, sees a fig” comes to my mind.

На са́мом де́ле, э́то ста́рая ру́сская посло́вица о неве́жестве, ти́па ско́лько ни чита́ет, ничего́ не понима́ет, но в на́ше вре́мя выраже́ние ча́ще употребля́ется в том смы́сле, что я описа́ла вы́ше. Что тако́е фи́га – мы уже́ обсужда́ли в одно́м из подкастов. Так что вооружа́йтесь, и испо́льзуйте на здоро́вье!

In fact, this is an old Russian proverb about ignorance, like “no matter how much he reads, he still does not understand anything”, but in our time this expression is more often used in the sense that I described above. What is ‘fig’ we already discussed in one of the podcasts. So arm yourself (with it), and use it for your health!

А мы перехо́дим к ни пройти́, ни прое́хать. Э́та расхо́жая фра́за употребля́ется для описа́ния чего́-то загора́живающего прохо́д и́ли про́сто экстрема́льной тесноты́. Наприме́р:

And we are moving to “neither pass by, nor drive by”. This common phrase is used to describe something that is obstructing the way, or simply extreme tightness. For example:

– На́до сказа́ть сосе́ду переста́ть тут паркова́ться, ни пройти́ ни прое́хать и́з-за него́.

– We gotta tell the neighbor to stop parking here, can’t neither walk nor drive because of him.

– Что у вас тут всё коро́бками заста́влено? Ни пройти́ ни прое́хать хоро́шему челове́ку!

– What are these boxes you piled here? Good people can’t walk through!

Ну вот, жа́ловаться на тесноту́ мы научи́лись, дава́йте нау́чимся жа́ловаться на ме́дленную ско́рость чего́-ли́бо.

Well, we’ve learned how to complain about the tightness, let’s learn how to complain about the slow speed of something.

– Ну как рабо́та?
– Тяжело́. Выжима́ем вот из себя́ текст в час по ча́йной ло́жке.

– So how is work?
– Hard. We are squeezing the text out of ourselves one teaspoon per hour.

– Торго́вля здесь не идёт, продаю́ в час по ча́йной ло́жке.

– The trade does not go well here, I sell a teaspoon per hour.

Первонача́льно, в час по ча́йной ло́жке писа́лось апте́карями на буты́лочках с лека́рством, но зате́м, по како́й причи́не – исто́рия ума́лчивает, выраже́ние перекати́лось в повседне́вную речь и испо́льзуется ны́нче для описа́ния чего́-то о́чень ме́дленного.

Initially, “a teaspoon per hour” was written by the pharmacists on the bottles of medicine, but then, the history is silent about the reasons, the expression is rolled over to everyday speech and is used today to describe something very slow.

На э́том я закругля́юсь (то есть зака́нчиваю) на сего́дня. Пусть вам никогда́ не прихо́дится ни на что жа́ловаться, и пусть всегда́ вам све́тит со́лнце, е́сли не на не́бе, то в душе́! До встре́чи!

I’m wrapping up (i.e. finishing) on this for today. May you never have to complain about anything, and may the sun always shine for you, if not in the sky, then in the soul! See you!

      Hola Alvaro,

En realidad no planeaba traducirlo en español (simplemente porque mi español es demasiado pobre para eso), pero si encuentro a un voluntario que pueda hacerlo, definitivamente añadiré la traducción al sitio.
