Вешать лапшу на уши

Russian idioms about lies

Hi everybody! The topic of today’s episode is “telling lies”. As usual, we’ll learn a few expressions that Russians use talking about liars and look at some examples.

Всем приве́т.

Hello everybody.

Сегодняший вы́пуск посвящён выраже́ниям на те́му лжи и обма́на.

Today’s episode is dedicated to the expression about telling lies.

Врать мо́жно по-ра́зному. Мо́жно что́-то не догова́ривать, т.е. говори́ть полупра́вду, а мо́жно на́гло ве́шать лапшу́ на у́ши:

One can lie differently. One can keep something back, i.e. “say half-true”, or one can boldly “hang noodles on the ears”:

Конча́й нам лапшу́ на у́ши ве́шать уже́, все вокру́г зна́ют пра́вду, то́лько ты не признаёшься.

Enough hanging noodles on our ears already, everybody around knows the truth, only you don’t admit it.

Ко́е-кто мо́жет попыта́ться заговори́ть вам зу́бы. Загова́ривать зу́бы зна́чит врать и́ли запу́тывать, пыта́ться сбить с то́лку и́ли увести́ от разгово́ра.

Some can try to put a spell on your teeth. “Заговаривать зубы” (to put a spell on the teeth) means to lie or to try to confuse somebody, to distract away from the topic.

Russian Pod 101

Ты мне зу́бы не загова́ривай, говори́ всё на чистоту́.

Don’t kid me, say everything as it is.

Е́сли вы ви́дите, что челове́к откры́то и беззасте́нчиво врёт (наприме́р, выступа́ющий по телеви́зору поли́тик), мо́жно сказа́ть:

If you see that somebody is openly and shamelessly lying (for example, a politician giving a speech on TV), you can say:

– Смотри́ на него́, врёт и не красне́ет.

– Look at him, lying with no blushing.

Врать с три ко́роба означа́ет не́кий суще́ственный объём лжи, враньё “напропалу́ю”.

“Tell a pack of lies” means some significant amount of lies, that somebody lied regardless of the consequences.

Kalinka Russian Course

Он навра́л им с три ко́роба, а они́ у́ши разве́сили.

He told them a pack of lies, and they believed him.

Разве́сить у́ши означа́ет быть сли́шком дове́рчивым.

На сего́дня всё, жела́ю вам не врать и не быть обма́нутыми. До ско́рой встре́чи!

That’s it for today. I wish you not to lie and not be be lied to. See you soon!
