Водить за нос и втирать очки

Сего́дня я предлага́ю продо́лжить на́чатую в про́шлый раз те́му лжи, вранья́ и обма́на и вооружи́ться ещё не́сколькими выраже́ниями из э́той се́рии. А начнём мы с води́ть за нос и втира́ть очки́. О́ба выраже́ния означа́ют “обма́нывать, вводи́ть в заблужде́ние”.

Today I offer you to continue the topic of lies started last time and arm ourselves with a few of more phrases of that sort. We’ll start with ‘to lead by the nose’ and ‘to rub the glasses in’. Both mean ‘to lie, to deceive’.

Да она́ же во́дит тебя́ за нос, а ты и повёлся!

She is leading you by the nose and you believed her!

То ли он действи́тельно ру́бит в те́ме, то ли нам очки́ втира́ет.

Either he really knows what he is talking about, or he draws the wool over our eyes.

Повёлся зна́чит пове́рил. Э́то сленг: повести́сь на что́-то зна́чит пове́рить в э́то что́-то.

‘Got led’ means ‘believed’. This is slang: ‘to be led on something’ means to believe in it.

Руби́ть в те́ме означа́ет разбира́ться в чём-то. Наприме́р, он не ру́бит ни фи́га означа́ет, что он ничего́ не понима́ет.

‘To chop in the topic’ means to be savvy, to understand the topic. For example: ‘he does not chop a thing’ means that he does not understand anything.

Просто́й спо́соб не вести́сь на вра́ки – э́то нача́ть руби́ть в те́ме.

A simple way not to get led by lies is to start chopping in the topic.

Т.е. просто́й спо́соб не быть обма́нутым – э́то разобра́ться в те́ме самому́, хотя́ бы немно́го.

I.e. a simple way not to be lied to is to know about the topic yourself, at least a little bit.

Предполага́ется, что води́ть за нос произошло́ от обраще́ния с живо́тными, кото́рым вставля́ли в нос кольцо́, что́бы контроли́ровать их движе́ние.

‘To lead by the nose’ supposedly came from a way of treating animals when they are put a ring in the nose to control their movements.

Очки́ из выраже́ния втира́ть очки́, э́то не те, что лю́ди но́сят на носу́, а те, кото́рые на игра́льных ка́ртах (кра́сные и чёрные зна́ки на ка́ртах называ́ются очки́, есть да́же така́я ка́рточная игра́ “Очко́”). Так вот жу́льничество, когда́ путём накле́ивания на ка́рту и́ли замазывания её часте́й, восьмёрка, наприме́р, превраща́ется в семёрку и́ли наоборо́т, и получи́ло назва́ние очковтира́тельство.

‘Glasses/points’ from the expression ‘to rub the glasses in’ are not the ones that people wear on the nose, but the ones from the playing cards (red and black signs on the card are also called ‘points’, there is even a card game called ‘A point’). So the type of scam where by gluing on top of a card or by caulking its parts an ‘eight’ can be transformed into a ‘seven’ and vice versa, got the name ‘rubbing the points in’.

Любо́й лжец ра́но и́ли по́здно риску́ет быть вы́веденным на чи́стую во́ду, т.е. разоблачённым во лжи.

Any lair sooner or later is risking to get ‘brought to clear water’, i.e. exposed.

– Что́бы вы́вести вруна́ на чи́стую во́ду ча́сто доста́точно про́сто обрати́ть осо́бое внима́ние на движе́ния его́ глаз и о́бщую ми́мику.

– To take a lair out to clear water it’s often enough just to pay special attention to his eyes movements and general mimic.

Е́сли же лгун ока́зывается не разоблачённым, говоря́т, что он вы́шел сухи́м из воды́.

If a lair never gets exposed, it’s said ‘he came out of the water dry’.

У сле́дствия тепе́рь сто́лько ули́к, что на э́тот раз им вы́йти сухи́ми из воды́ то́чно не уда́стся!

The investigators now have so much evidence that this time they won’t come out of the water dry for sure!

Та́кже вы́йти сухи́м из воды́ мо́жет не то́лько врун, но и любо́й, кто избежа́л неприя́тностей.

Also, not only a lair can ‘get out of water dry’ but anyone who avoided trouble.

Он попа́л в ава́рию, но, к сча́стью, вы́шел сухи́м из воды́ – то́лько пора́нил ло́коть.

He got into an accident but fortunately got out of the water dry – just hurt the elbow.

На сего́дня всё. Не возволяйте води́ть себя́ за нос и втира́ть вам очки́, руби́те в те́ме и выво́дите лжецо́в на чи́стую во́ду!
