Зависнуть

Learn what "зависнуть" means in Russian slang

Hi everybody! Today’s word, зависнуть, can be used both for people and things. Learn what it means from this new episode of “Very Much Russian podcast“!

Здра́вствуйте вам!

Greetings to you!

Ну вот мы и сно́ва услы́шались!

Here we are again!

Я наде́юсь, вы превосхо́дно провели́ пра́здники и 2013 год на́чался для вас прия́тными сюрпри́зами. Но́вый год – но́вые зна́ния. Э́тим мы и займёмся сейча́с :).

I hope you had great holidays and 2013 started for you with pleasant surprises. New Year – new knowledge. This is what we are going to do now :).

На́ше сего́дняшнее сло́во – зави́снуть – молодёжный сленг. Я приведу́ не́сколько приме́ров, а ва́ша зада́ча – попро́бовать догада́ться, что оно́ зна́чит. Ита́к:

Our today’s word “to hover” is a youth slang. I will give you some examples, and your task is to try to guess what it means. So:

Ты где зави́с?

Were are (were) you?

Мы зави́сли там на полдня́.

We got stuck there for half a day.

Пойдём у тебя́ зави́снем?

Let’s go hang out at your place?

Есть иде́и? Открыва́ю ка́рты: зави́снуть зна́чит “находи́ться где́-то до́лгое вре́мя, задержа́ться”.

Any ideas? I open the cards: “зависнуть” means “to be somewhere for a long time, to stay”.

В хо́ду та́кже глаго́л несоверше́нного ви́да зависа́ть.

There is also an imperfective form of this verb – “зависать”.

Мы ка́ждый ве́чер тут зависа́ем.

We hang out here every evening.

Russian Pod 101

Зна́чит, что мы сюда́ прихо́дим ка́ждый ве́чер и прово́дим здесь како́е-то вре́мя.

It means that we come here every evening and spend some time here.

Зависа́ть мо́гут не то́лько лю́ди, но и те́хника – компью́теры и телефо́ны. Е́сли компью́тер зави́с, зна́чит, что он переста́л отвеча́ть и не реаги́рует ни на нажа́тие кла́виш, ни на движе́ния мы́шки. Наприме́р:

It’s not only people who can “зависать”, but also technical devices – computers and telephones. If the computer “завис”, it means that it has stopped responding and does not react to any keystrokes or mouse movements. For example:

Я провела́ на по́чте це́лый час – у них постоя́нно ви́сли комьютеры, поэ́тому о́чередь продвига́лась нереа́льно ме́дленно.

I spent an hour at the post office – their computers constantly hung, so the queue progressed unrealistically slowly.

Мой телефо́н виси́т уже́ пятна́дцать мину́т. Ты не посмо́тришь, что с ним?

My phone has been frozen for the last fifteen minutes. Could you have a look what’s wrong with it?

– Ты почему́ не рабо́таешь?
– У меня́ компью́тер зави́с.

– Why aren’t you working?
– My computer is frozen.

На э́том всё. Вам жела́ю поча́ще зависа́ть в прия́тных места́х и не ста́лкиваться с зависа́ющей те́хникой. Проща́юсь на сего́дня, пока́!

That’s it for now. I wish you to hang out more often in pleasant places and do not come across hanging devices. Goodbye for today, пока́!

Well, I like this website because of slang. Well, I really don’t know anything about Russian slang or English slang.

I wanted to give my input. I think that today’s word in regards to people is equivalent to the american slang “to hang out”. This phrase is also used by young people. For instance, one can say: ” I am going over to hang out at my friend’s house.” or “Let’s go to the mall to hang out.” Let me know if I am on the right track. Thanks! David

      Hello little pharaoh,

I understand that most readers would prefer the podcast to be fully translated, but to my regret my English doesn’t let me to provide a good translation.

I try to explain Russian slang in Russian using simple words, so readers could understand the meaning. In the end of the post I list featured words with translation.

A few first episodes are already translated by Jonathan Anderson Riley who kindly volunteered to help with that.

Anyway I hope one day all episodes will be translated one way or another.

      Thanks for your feedback.

      Привет, Omar.

Не совсем. Когда комьютер “глючит”, он еще работает, хотя и неправильно.
А когда он “завис”, то работать на нем уже невозможно.
