Геморрой

Hi everyone! Not to worry, we are not going to talk about health issues… the word “геморрой” has one more meaning in Russian which we are going to discover today. Join me for the new episode of the Very Much Russian podcast and learn more. 🙂

Всем приве́т.

Hello everyone.

Не удивля́йтесь назва́нию вы́пуска, сего́дня мы не бу́дем говори́ть о здоро́вье. Сло́вом геморро́й ру́сские лю́ди называ́ют любы́е сло́жности, с кото́рыми ста́лкиваются. Наприме́р:

Do not be surprised with the name of the episode, today we are not talking about health. Russians use the word “hemorrhoids” to name any difficulties they encounter. For example:

Получи́ть ви́зу в А́нглию э́то настоя́щий геморро́й.

Getting a visa to England is an absolute nightmare.

Ты не представля́ешь, како́й геморро́й получи́ть креди́т в ба́нке.

You can’t imagine how difficult it is to get a loan from a bank.

Иногда́, мы сокраща́ем сло́во до ге́мор и звучи́т э́то приме́рно так:

Sometimes, we shorten the word to “гемор” and it sounds like this:

Ну и за что э́тот ге́мор на мою́ го́лову? Почему́ я должна́ отдува́ться за всех?

Why is it my pain in the ass? Why should I be responsible for everyone?

Отдува́ться за всех зна́чит отвеча́ть, нести́ отве́тственность за всех.

“Отдуваться за всех” means to be responsible for everyone.

Они́ всё испо́ртили, а мне тепе́рь отдува́ться.

They’ve messed up everything, and I have to deal with it now.

На мою́ го́лову, упа́сть на го́лову, вы́пасть на го́лову – э́ти выраже́ния испо́льзуются, когда́ на вас внеза́пно сва́ливаются каки́е-ли́бо неприя́тности. Наприме́р, я могу́ сказа́ть о челове́ке, кото́рый доставля́ет мне хло́поты:

“On my head”, “to fall down on one’s head” – these expressions are used when you are suddenly faced any difficult situation. For example, I can say about a person who gives me trouble:

И отку́да ты взя́лся на мою́ го́лову?

Where are your coming from giving me grief?

Наде́юсь, вам никогда́ не вы́падет на го́лову геморро́й отдува́ться за то, что вы не де́лали. Здоро́вья вам и уда́чи. До ско́рого!

I hope you’ll never be faced with a necessity to be respobsible for the things you haven’t done. Best of health and success to you. Until next time!
