Во попёрло…

Hi everyone! In this podcast we’ll be talking about black and white stripes of life and Russian automotive slang. There is a whole bunch of new Russian words which you won’t find in the stardard Russian textbooks, so don’t miss it! 🙂

Приве́тствую вас!

Greetings to you!

Жизнь, как говори́тся, э́то полоса́ бе́лая и полоса́ чёрная. Бе́лая, э́то когда́ всё зашиби́сь, когда́ уда́ча улыба́ется тебе́ на ка́ждом ша́гу, и всё скла́дывается как нельзя́ лу́чше. Чёрная, э́то когда́ не прёт – ве́щи ва́лятся из рук и неприя́тности подстерега́ют тебя́ на ка́ждом ша́гу.

The life, as they say, is a strip of white and a strip of black (changing each other). White is when everything is awesome, when the good luck smiles at you on every step, and the things are as good as they get. Black is when things are not going well – everything is falling out from your hands and trouble is waiting for you on every step.

Но э́то как посмотре́ть… Му́дрые лю́ди говоря́т, что любо́й жи́зненный о́пыт, каки́м бы тяжёлым он ни́ был, э́то всё же положи́тельный о́пыт. Всё, что не убива́ет нас, де́лает нас сильне́е, и нет ху́да без добра́.

But it depends on how to look at it… Wise people say that any life experience, however heavy it is, is still a positive experience. Everything that does not kill us makes us stronger, and there is no evil without good.

Будучи в хоро́шем расположе́нии ду́ха, предлага́ю вам сего́дня сосредото́чить на́ше с ва́ми внима́ние на бе́лой полосе́ жи́зни. 🙂

Being in good mood, I suggest that today we focus our attention on the white stripe of life. 🙂

Во попёрло – э́та фра́за стои́т в заголо́вке, а означа́ет она́ “ничего́ себе́, как везёт!”

“Во попёрло” – this phrase is in the title and means “wow, so lucky!”.

– Ещё вчера́ я ду́мал, где доста́ть де́нег, что́бы заплати́ть за кварти́ру, а сего́дня я получи́л це́лых три су́пер вы́годных предложе́ния о рабо́те!
Вот э́то попёрло!

– Just yesterday I was thinking where to get money to pay my rent, and today I’ve got three super interesting job offers!
– You are a lucky one!

Во попёрло, что ни день, так хоро́шие но́вости!

– So good, every new day good news!

Попёрло – э́то произво́дное от глаго́ла пере́ть. Е́сли кому́-то прёт, зна́чит, что ему́ сопу́тствует уда́ча.

“Попёрло” is a derivative of the verb “переть”. If it’s “прёт” for someone, it means he is lucky.

От э́того же сло́ва происхо́дит существи́тельное пру́ха, что зна́чит “уда́ча”, и обра́тное ему́ непру́ха, т.е. “неуда́ча”.

From the same word we derive the noun “пруха”, which means “good luck”, and the opposite to it “непруха”, i.e. “bad luck”.

Вот непруха… то́лько вчера́ купи́л маши́ну, а сего́дня мне уже́ поцара́пали бочи́ну

That’s a bad luck… I bought the car just yesterday, and today it already has scratches on the side…

Бочи́на – э́то бок, бокова́я часть автомоби́ля. То́же сленг. Кста́ти, е́сли говори́ть об автомоби́льном сле́нге, то в наибо́льшем хо́ду таки́е слова́ как:

“Бочина” is the side of the car. It’s slang too. By the way, talking about automotive slang, the most use got the following words:

бара́нка – что зна́чит “руль”, происхожде́ние сло́ва свя́зано с люби́мым мно́гими хлебобу́лочным изде́лием, по фо́рме напомина́ющем руль:

– “бара́нка” means “steering wheel”, the origin of the word is related to a popular bakery product which reminds a steering wheel with its shape:

Baranka - Russian automotive slang

бо́мба – автомоби́ль ма́рки BMW,
мерс – автомоби́ль ма́рки Mercedes,
встре́чка – встре́чная полоса́,
запа́ска – запасно́е колесо́,
рези́на – покры́шки колёс, очеви́дно потому́, что основны́м материа́лом для покры́шек явля́ется рези́на. Рези́на быва́ет ле́тняя и зи́мняя:

– “бомба” (bomb) – BMW car,
– “мерс” – Mercedes car,
– “встречка” – opposite lane,
– “запаска” – spare wheel,
– “резина” (rubber) – tires, obviously because the main material for tires is rubber. Rubber can be “of summer” and “of winter”:

blank

– Ты уже́ поменя́л рези́ну?
– Не успе́л ещё, хотя́ пора́ бы уже́, ско́льзко.

– Have you changed the rubber already?
– Didn’t have time yet, although it’s time already, slippery.

топи́ть – зна́чит бы́стро е́хать:

– “топить” – means to drive fast:

– Куда́ ты так то́пишь? Мы же не опа́здываем…

– Where are you driving so fast? We are not late…

– Он топи́л вы́ше 150-ти.

– He was stoking (driving) more (faster) than 150.

Т.е. он е́хал со ско́ростью вы́ше 150 км/час.

I.e. he drove at a speed above 150 km/h.

Ну что ж, ду́маю, что на сего́дня доста́точно. Пусть бу́дут в ва́шей жи́зни то́лько бе́лые по́лосы, меня́йте рези́ну во́время и никогда́ не выезжа́йте на встре́чку, да́же е́сли вы на ме́рсе. 🙂

Well, I think that is enough for today. Let there will be only white stripes in your life, change the rubber on time and never drive on the opposite lane even if you are on a Mers. 🙂

Уда́чи всем и до ско́рой встре́чи!

Good luck to everyone and see you soon!
