Залить за воротник

Russian slang for drinking

In today’s episode of “Very Much Russian podcast” we’ll continue expand your ‘Russian drinking vocabulary’ and learn some more Russian words and phrases related to drinking alcohol.

Приве́т, друзья́!

Hello friends!

По́мните, зимо́й мы обсужда́ли ле́ксику, свя́занную со спиртны́ми напи́тками? Сего́дня предлага́ю ва́шему внима́нию ещё немно́го фраз на э́ту те́му, а и́менно:

Remember, last winter we discussed some vocabulary related to alcohol? Today I’m offering you a few more expressions related to that, namely:

зали́ть за воротни́к,
приня́ть на грудь,
уговори́ть буты́лку,
пропусти́ть по стопарю́,
подда́ть.

– to pour over the collar,
– to take on the chest,
– to persuade the bottle,
– let a small glass go,
– to give more.

Все на́ши сего́дняшние выраже́ния име́ют оди́н и тот же смысл – вы́пить (чего́-нибу́дь спиртно́го, само́ собо́й). Поэ́тому, не му́дрствуя лука́во, предлага́ю перейти́ сра́зу к приме́рам:

All of our today’s expressions have the same meaning – to drink (some sort of alcohol, of course). Therefore, without philosophizing archly, I propose to go directly to the examples:

Он большо́й люби́тель зали́ть за воротни́к.

He is a great fan of “pouring over the collar”.

Они́ вдвоём уговори́ли це́лую буты́лку во́дки.

They both “persuaded” a whole bottle of vodka.

В тот день он хороше́нько при́нял на грудь, поэ́тому за руль благоразу́мно сади́ться не стал.

That day he “took good on his chest”, so reasonably decided not to drive.

Уже́ хорошо́ подда́вший, он шата́лся из стороны́ в сто́рону и едва́ воро́чал языко́м.

Having “added well” already, he staggered from side to side and barely moved his tongue.

Пе́ред у́жином они́ пропусти́ли по стопарю́ для подня́тия аппети́та.

Before the dinner, they “passed a small glass each” to improve the appetite.

Стопа́рь – э́то сто́пка, ма́ленький стака́нчик для во́дки.

“Стопарь” comes from “стопка”, is a small glass for vodka.

Коне́чно, э́то далеко́ не всё. Я ду́маю, е́сли бы кто-то зада́лся це́лью собра́ть все слова́ и выраже́ния ру́сского языка́, так и́ли ина́че относя́щиеся к вы́пивке и пья́нству, то хвати́ло бы на це́лую кни́жку.

Of course, this is not the complete list. I think if someone set oneself to collect all Russian words and expressions one way or another related to drinking and alcoholism, it would be enough for a whole book.

Before saying goodbye, I want you to pay your attention to one of the phrases I used – “не мудрствуя лукаво”. This is nothing more than a line from Pushkin’s novel “Boris Godunov.” For a modern Russian such a wording sounds strange, because nobody speaks like that anymore, but nevertheless it’s fun. Therefore, this expression can often be heard in the sense of “without complicating things”.

Ну вот и всё. Береги́те здоро́вье. Как говори́л оди́н до́ктор, никогда́ не зна́ешь, когда́ оно́ мо́жет пригоди́ться. 🙂

That’s it. Take care of your health. As one doctor said, you never know when it might come in handy. 🙂
