Прикол

Today’s episode of the Very Much Russian podcast is dedicated to the Russian slang “прикол” and its derivatives.

Всем приве́т!

Hello everyone!

Э́то сло́во я впервы́е услы́шала где́-то в нача́ле девяно́стых. Уж не зна́ю, то ли появи́лось оно́ и́менно в тот пери́од, то ли про́сто дошло́ до мои́х уше́й, но с тех пор оно́ про́чно вошло́ в мою́ жизнь и не то́лько в мою́.

First time I heard this word somewhere in the early nineties. I do not know whether it appeared at that time or just reached my ears back then, but since that time it has firmly entered my life and not only mine.

Прико́л – э́то не́что заба́вное, ирони́ческое и́ли да́же абсу́рдное. Э́то мо́жет быть ситуа́ция и́ли факт. Наприме́р:

‘Прикол’ (gag, trick, prank) is something funny, ironic or even absurd. This can be a situation or a fact. For example:

То, как я сдава́л экза́мен, э́то вообще́ отде́льный прико́л, я тебе́ пото́м расскажу́.

How I passed the exam is a separate gag, I’ll tell you later.

Всю доро́гу с на́ми случа́лись разли́чные прико́лы, то пти́ца отку́да-то све́рху в паке́т с едо́й нага́дит, то такси́ не туда́ завезёт.

All the way there were experiencing all sorts of funny situations, either a bird from somewhere above poops into a package with food, or a taxi brings to a wrong address.

Приколо́ться – зна́чит подшути́ть и́ли посмея́ться над чем-нибу́дь смешны́м. Наприме́р:

‘Приколоться’ (make a joke, make fun of somebody), means to make a joke or to have a laugh about something funny. For example:

Приколи́сь, я вчера́ оста́вила ключи́ от до́ма на рабо́те, а поняла́ э́то то́лько придя домо́й по́здно ве́чером. Пришло́сь проси́ться ночева́ть к сосе́дям.

Imagine, yesterday I left the keys to the house at work but realized that only when I came home late at night. I had to ask my neighbors to let me in for the night.

Конча́йте прика́лываться и займи́тесь де́лом.

Enough joking around, get yourself busy.

Прико́льный – зна́чит интере́сный, заба́вный, смешно́й, ми́лый. Прико́льными быва́ют лю́ди и ве́щи. Наприме́р:

‘Прикольный’ means interesting, funny, cute, cool. It can be people and things. For example:

Кака́я прико́льная шту́чка, а что э́то тако́е?

Such a cool thing, what is it?

Russian Pod 101

Смотри́ како́й прико́льный малы́ш!

Look what a cute baby!

Е́сли челове́к лю́бит прика́лываться, т.е. шути́ть, его́ мо́жно назва́ть приколи́стом и́ли приколи́сткой, е́сли э́то де́вушка. Наприме́р:

If a person likes to “прикалываться”, i.e. to joke/make fun, he can be called ‘prikolist’ (funny guy, joker) or ‘prikolistka’ (funny girl), if it’s a girl. For example:

Ребя́та – приколи́сты, с ни́ми не соску́чишься, они́ ве́чно что-нибу́дь приду́мывают.

The guys are funny, you will never get bored with them, they always come up with something.

Ну, и е́сли вам что́-то нра́вится и́ли вызыва́ет воодушевле́ние и ра́дость, мо́жно сказа́ть:

And, if you like something or are excited and happy about something, you can say:

Как прико́льно!

So cool!

Ну вот и всё на сего́дня. Прика́лывайтесь, будьте прико́льными и да бу́дем прико́льно вам! До ско́рой встре́чи! 🙂

And that’s it for today. Make jokes, be funny and may the coolness be with you! See you soon! 🙂
