Залететь

Learn what “залететь” means in modern conversational Russian from today’s episode of Very Much Russian podcast.

Приве́тствую!

Greetings!

The theme of flights is special for humanity which by nature is doomed to walk on the ground but desperately tries to change it inventing all sorts of technical tricks. Probably, the vast majority of people flew in their dreams. Many share the fear of flying on an airplane. Desperate ones decide to engage in skydiving and other kinds of “flying” sports… Everyone can share their thoughts and experience on this matter, but all this… has nothing to do with our today’s topic – pregnancy.

Каза́лось бы, кака́я связь ме́жду полётами и бере́менностью? Да никако́й, кро́ме на́шего сего́дняшнего сло́ва.

One could think, what is the connection between flights and pregnancy? Well, there is none except our today’s word.

Залете́ть – э́то глаго́л, от сло́ва «лете́ть / лета́ть». В прямо́м и обы́чном смы́сле залете́ть зна́чит «оказа́ться в како́м-нибу́дь ме́сте, попа́в туда́ по во́здуху». Наприме́р:

“Залететь” is a verb, that comes from the word “лететь / летать” (to fly). In the direct and usual sense, “залететь” means “to end up in a place having got there by the air”. For example:

К нам в окно́ залете́ла ба́бочка.

A butterfly flew into our window.

Мяч залете́л в откры́тый люк.

The ball flew into an open hatch.

Вторы́м и дово́льно общеизве́стным значе́нием э́того сло́ва явля́ется «забере́менеть», наприме́р.

The second and quite well-known meaning of this word is “to become pregnant”, for example:

На сего́дняшний день приду́мана уже́ ма́сса спо́собов, что́бы не залете́ть, е́сли ты э́того не хо́чешь.

Today, there is already a lot of ways not to get pregnant if you do not want it.

Она́ залете́ла и ей пришло́сь уйти́ с рабо́ты.

She got pregnant and she had to leave work.

По поня́тным причи́нам, залете́ть мо́жет то́лько осо́ба же́нского по́ла.

For obvious reasons, only a female person can “залететь”.

Отку́да пошло́ э́то выраже́ние, не могу́ вам сказа́ть – интерне́т не дал мне отве́та на э́тот вопро́с. Но могу́ сказа́ть друго́е: от сло́ва залете́ть образу́ется существи́тельное залёт, и означа́ет оно́ то же са́мое, наприме́р:

I can not tell you the origin of this expression – the Internet did not give me an answer to this question. But I can say another thing: from the word “залететь” comes the noun “залёт”, and it means the same thing, example:

Она́ вы́шла за́муж по залёту.

She got married because she was pregnant.

Кста́ти, для тех, кто упусти́л э́тот моме́нт в своё вре́мя: в ру́сском языке́ же́нщины «выхо́дят за́муж», а мужчи́ны «же́нятся». Э́тот ньюа́нс пу́тают поро́й да́же са́ми ру́сские, осо́бенно де́ти.

By the way, for those who missed this moment in their time: in Russian, women “get married”, and men “marry”. This nuance sometimes escapes even the Russians themselves, especially children.

Пусть ва́ша семе́йная жизнь доставля́ет вам ра́дость, а ва́ши де́ти (е́сли они́ у вас есть), опра́вдывают ва́ши са́мые лу́чшие ожида́ния. Сча́стливо и до ско́рой встре́чи!

May your family life give you joy, and your children (if you have them) fulfill your best expectations. Cheers and see you soon!
