Зашиваться

Hello everybody! In today’s episode of Very Much Russian podcast you’ll learn what it means to ‘sew oneself up’ and how to express your lack of time in Russian.

Приве́т вам, люби́тели ру́сского языка́!

Hello to you, Russian language lovers!

Э́тот вы́пуск посвяща́ется тем из вас, кому́ ка́жется, что 24 ча́са в су́тках – э́то непрости́тельно ма́ло для тех, кто хо́чет успе́ть сде́лать всё. Т.е. сего́дня мы разберём не́сколько выраже́ний о нехва́тке вре́мени.

This episode is dedicated to those of you who think that 24 hours in a day is unforgivably little for those who wants to have time to do everything. I.e. today we will discuss a few expression about the lack of time.

Начнём с зашива́ться. Что́бы зашива́ться, и́ли быть в заши́ве, совсе́м не обяза́тельно быть портны́м, а доста́точно быть про́сто заняты́м челове́ком.

We’ll start from “зашиваться” (to sew oneself up). To to sew oneself up, or to be “в зашиве” is not necessarily to be a tailor, it’s enough just to be a busy person.

Ты мог бы мне помо́чь? А то я тут зашива́юсь.

Could you help me? I’m not able to manage all of this alone.

Я в тако́м зашиве, что чихну́ть не́когда!

I’m so busy so even have no time to sneeze!

Почему́ челове́к в зашиве? Потому́ что дел (и́ли рабо́ты) под завя́зку!

Why a person is in “зашив”? Because there are too many things or work to do!

Не смогу́ вы́рваться сего́дня, рабо́ты под завя́зку. Дава́й встре́тимся на выходны́х лу́чше.

I can’t get out today, loads of work. Let’s better meet on weekend.

У меня́ дел под завя́зку, так что я сего́дня по́здно бу́ду.

I have heaps of things to do, so I’ll be late today.

Вы́рваться в приме́ре вы́ше зна́чит освободи́ться от дел наконе́ц-то и сходи́ть куда́-то. Та́кже мо́жно сказа́ть вы́браться, наприме́р:

“Вырваться” in the example above means “to finally break free from work and go somewhere”. Also you can say “выбраться”:

Мы за всё ле́то так и не вы́брались на пляж.

For the whole summer we couldn’t get out to the beach.

На э́том всё на сего́дня. Жела́ю вам посвяща́ть как мо́жно ме́ньше часо́в рабо́те, и как мо́жно бо́льше – ва́шей семье́ и люби́мым.

That’s it for today. I wish you to spend as less as possible hours working, and as much as possible with your family and beloved ones.

До ско́рой встре́чи!

See you soon!
