Завались

We have a very good word today – “завались”. I really like it, especially when it comes to delicious food, money and other goodies. Do you know what does it means? Learn it from today’s episode!

Hey. Have you ever watched old Soviet cartoons? If not, I highly recommend them. One of my favorites is “Vacations in Prostokvashino”. A cat named Matroskin (from the word “матрос” – a sailor), said there:

Gutalin – we have lots of it, our grandfather works on a factory that makes it.

“Gutalin” is a shoe polish, it was very popular in Soviet times.

And “завались” is our today’s word. Guess what it means?

The cookies, we always have lots of them in our office. The secretary Anechka buys 2 boxes every day.

Help yourself with the apples, do not be shy. We have an apple tree in the yard, so there is lots of them.

Have you guessed it? “Завались” means “a lot”. Very much.

“Завались” is a verb, from the word “завалить”. When I think of how to explain the word “завалить”, I immediately imagine someone who pours something on your head from a large basket.

“Завались” is actually a very positive word. When there is so much that you want to share, it’s good. Of course, if it’s something good. Therefore, I want to finish this episode with wishing you abundance and prosperity. Until next time!

  1. “Завались!” also means “Shut up!”, so it isn’t such a good world. Another example: “Завали хлебало!” means the same.

      Hello Semplar,

“Завали” and “Завались” are different words and do not mean the same.

Your example is correct but you can’t say “ЗавалиСЬ хлебало!”. Actually I can’t recall any example where “Завались” would mean “Shut up!”.

If you have any questions I’d be glad to help. Good luck.
