Зажигать

Russian slang expressions related to having fun and partying

This is the last episode of 2012 and today we’ll cover a few very Russian expressions related to having fun and partying. Despite the fact that all of these words are derived from one verb – жечь (to burn), there is a difference in meaning depending on which derivative is used. Want to know more? Join me for the new episode of the “Very Much Russian podcast“! 🙂

Приве́т!

Hi!

Э́тот после́дний в э́том году́ вы́пуск подска́ста логи́чным о́бразом посвящён пра́здникам и весе́лью. Сего́дняшнее на́ше сло́во – зажига́ть – на молодёжном сле́нге зна́чит “отдыха́ть, весели́ться”. Наприме́р:

This last in this year episode of the podcast is logically dedicated to holidays and fun. The today’s word of ours is “зажигать” (to light up), in youth slang it means “to enjoy oneself, to have fun”. For example:

Как мы вчера́ зажига́ли! Зря ты с на́ми не пошёл.

Oh we had so much fun yesterday! It’s a shame you didn’t go with us.

Второ́е значе́ние э́того сло́ва подразумева́ет экстраордина́рное поведе́ние. Но в э́том слу́чае мы говори́м не зажига́ть, а жечь, отже́чь и́ли заже́чь. Причём отже́чь означа́ет скоре́е что́-то смешно́е и неадекватное, а заже́чь – что́-то выдаю́щееся. Наприме́р:

The second meaning of this word implies extraordinary behavior. But in this case, we say not “зажигать”, but “жечь” (to burn), “отжечь” (to anneal) or “зажечь” (to light up, to set something on fire). “Отжечь” means rather something funny and inadequate, and “зажечь” – something outstanding. For example:

Ну ты отжёг!

Wow, the way you did it (was something)!

Что зна́чит, “ты сде́лал что́-то тако́е, что всех удиви́ло”, “то, что ты сде́лал, бы́ло стра́нно”.

Which means “you did something that surprised everyone”, “what you did was unusial”.

Твой брат жёг весь ве́чер.

Your brother was a center of attention all evening.

Понима́ть э́то мо́жно двоя́ко – он ли́бо весели́л всех и был, что называ́ется, гвоздём програ́ммы, ли́бо де́лал что́-то тако́е, от чего́ все недоумева́ли.

This can understood in two ways: either he was a highlight of the party, as they say, “the nail of the program”, or he did something that everyone was puzzled about.

Она́ там так зажгла́!

She rocked it there!

Т.е. она́ прико́вывала всео́бщее внима́ние (в хоро́шем смы́сле э́того выраже́ния).

I.e. she attracted everyone’s attention (in the good sense of this expression).

Russian Pod 101

Е́сли мы хоти́м пожела́ть челове́ку, что́бы он как сле́дует оторва́лся (наприме́р, на како́й-нибу́дь вечери́нке) и́ли, допу́стим, хорошо́ вы́ступил и всех покори́л, ему́ мо́жно сказа́ть:

If we want to wish a person to have a proper fun (for example, at a party) or, let’s say, perform well and to win everybody’s heart, we can say to that person:

Дава́й, зажги́ там!

Go, have good fun there!

Е́сли мы хоти́м подбодри́ть челове́ка, кото́рый уже́ вошёл в раж (т.е. уже́ вовсю́ весели́тся и́ли что-нибу́дь вытворя́ет, что прико́вывает всео́бщее внима́ние), ему́ мо́жно сказа́ть:

If we want to cheer up someone who has already “flown into a passion” (i.e. already having fun or doing something that attracts everyone’s attention), we can say to him:

Дава́й, жги!

Come on, rock it!

Где э́то мо́жно употреби́ть? Ну, наприме́р, вы с друзья́ми в како́м-нибу́дь клу́бе и ваш друг вдруг начина́ет так забо́йно танцева́ть, что все вокру́г прекраща́ют танцева́ть са́ми и восхищённо смо́трят на него́. Забо́йно зна́чит о́чень хорошо́, вдохновлённо, зарази́тельно.

Where can this be used? Well, for example, you and your friends are in a club and your friend suddenly starts to dance “забойно” (so good) that everyone stops dancing and admiringly looks at him. “Забойно” means very well, inspired, contagious.

На э́той позити́вной но́те позво́льте мне зако́нчить на сего́дня и сообщи́ть, что прое́кт ухо́дит на “зи́мние кани́кулы”. Мы встре́тимся с ва́ми сно́ва 28-го января́.

On this positive note, let me finish for today and say that the project is going on a “winter vacation”. We will meet again on January 28th.

Поздравля́ю всех с Рождество́м (католи́ческим и правосла́вным). Всего́ вам са́мого наилу́чшего в наступа́ющем 2013 году. Жги́те, друзья́! Пусть исто́рия вас запо́мнит (в хоро́шем смы́сле, коне́чно :))!

I wish all of you a Merry Christmas (Catholic and Orthodox). All the best to you in the coming 2013. Rock it, friends! Make the history remember you (in a good way, of course :))!

Happy New Year!

  1. hello,

    br K.

    • Очень по-русски says:

      Hi Kasia,

      Firstly, thanks.

You actually can find the answer for your question in this very podcast: the project in on holidays till 28th of January. Also you can follow me on Facebook where I always publish the most actual news of the project.

As for your last question, it reminded me a passage from a funny tale which I heard as a child:
      – Помогите мне, я – бабушка, слепая, глухая и немая.
      – А как же вы говорите?
      – С большим трудом!
      🙂

I like to learn, especially languages. But truth is that I hardly find time for this lately, so now my learning goes very slowly.
Also I guess not spending my time for watching TV plays a great role (I simply don’t have one, got rid off it many time ago). Just an option 🙂

      • thank you for reply, yes, I was sure that you mentioned somewhere when you come back with new episodes but I could`t find it. Sometimes reading in Cirillic makes me troubles because I`m learning russian for one year. Or maybe I just wanted to put a comment :). So you`re doing a great job! thanks and keep it going the same.
