Здрасьте, приехали!

Expressing surprise in a very Russian way

Hello friends! Today we are taking one more step to become Russified and learning how to get surprised in a very Russian way.

Приве́т, друзья́.

Hello, friends.

Сего́дня мы рассмо́трим це́лую приго́ршню выраже́ний, кото́рые помо́гут вам ещё бо́льше обрусе́ть. Все они, в той и́ли ино́й сте́пени, выража́ют удивле́ние, иногда́ сме́шанное с други́ми эмо́циями.

Today we are looking at a whole handful of expressions that will help you become even more Russified. All of them, to a greater or lesser extend, express surprise, sometimes mixed with other emotions.

Начнём со Здра́стье, прие́хали!.

We’ll begin with “Здрастье, приехали!” (Hello, arrived!).

Здра́сьте, как вы возмо́жно догада́лись, происхо́дит от здра́вствуйте. Э́та разгово́рная уважи́тельная фо́рма мо́жет быть испо́льзована и за преде́лами э́того выраже́ния, ме́жду колле́гами, наприме́р.

“Здрасьте”, as you might have guessed already, comes from “здравствуйте”. This colloquial respectful form can be used even beyond this expression, among colleagues or neighbors, for example:

Russian Pod 101

Здра́сьте, Влади́мир Петро́вич. Я вам на стол по́чту за сего́дня положи́ла.

– Hello, Vladimir Petrovich. I put the mail for today on your table.

Здра́сьте, Наталь Иванна. Как ва́ше здоро́вье?

– Hello, Natalya Ivanna. How are you feeling today?

Само́ словосочета́ние Здра́стье, прие́хали! обы́чно выража́ет не то́лько удивле́ние, но и недово́льство в то же вре́мя. Послу́шаем приме́ры:

The expression “Здрастье, приехали!” in may cases means not only surprise, but also discontent. Let’s hear some examples:

– Ма́ма, ты то́лько не руга́йся, но я сде́лала татуиро́вку!
Ну здра́сьте прие́хали!

– Mom, you just don’t get mad, but I’ve made a tattoo!
– No way!

– А э́то кто?
Ну здра́сьте прие́хали! Ты что, родно́го брата не узнаёшь?

– Who is this?
– Here you go! Don’t you recognize your own brother?

Здра́сьте прие́хали! Ты куда́ собра́лся? А кто посу́ду бу́дет мыть?

Ha! Where do you think you are going? And who is doing the dishes?

Иногда́ Здра́сьте прие́хали! сокраща́ется до Ну приве́т…

Sometimes “Здрасьте приехали!” is shortened to “Ну привет…”

– Ты зна́ешь, я наве́рное не пое́ду никуда́.
Ну приве́т… почему́? Мы же договори́лись!

– You know, I think I won’t go anywhere.
– Here you go… why? Din’t we agreed before?

Та́кже своё удивле́ние, в той и́ли ино́й сте́пени, мо́жно вы́разить сле́дующими фра́зами:

Also, surprise, to some extend, can be expressed by the following phrases:

ну и ну!
вот э́то да!
ну и дела́!
ого́!
ничего́ себе́!
ух ты!
ну на́до же!

Сле́дующие выраже́ния несу́т но́тку недове́рия:

The following expressions convey a note of mistrust:

да ты что!
да ну!

А э́ти – но́тку осужде́ния:

And these ones – a note of disapproval:

ну ты даёшь!
ну ты вообще́!

blankblank

А выраже́ние вот те на! обы́чно испо́льзуется при неприя́тном сюрпри́зе.

And the expression “вот те на!” is usually used after an unpleasant surprise.

Послу́шаем не́сколько приме́ров, а вы попро́буйте ухвати́ть ньюансы..

Let’s hear a few examples, and you try to capture the nuances.

Ну и ну! Ни за что бы не пове́рил, е́сли бы свои́ми глаза́ми не уви́дел!

Wow! I would never believe it if I didn’t see it with my own eyes!

Вот э́то да! Ты э́то ви́дела?

Wow! Have you seen that?

Ну ты даёшь коне́чно! Кто же так парку́ется!

You are crazy! Who is parking like that?

Ну ты вообще́! Как тебя́ угора́здило?

What a type you are! How did this happened to you?

Да ты что! А ты что сказа́ла?

Are you serious? And what did you say?

Да ну! Пра́вда что-ли?

No way! Really?

Ну и дела́! Наро́чно не приду́маешь!

My goodnees! One couldn’t invent it!

Вот те на! Как же мы тепе́рь обра́тно попадём?

What the heck? How are we going to get back?

Ого́! Вот э́то, я понима́ю, пра́здник!

Wow! That’s what I call a festivity!

Ничего́ себе́ у тебя́ синя́к, где́ ты так?

What a bruise you have! Where did you get it?

Ух ты, смотри́те, смотри́те, э́то ж изве́стный актёр!

Wow, look, look, that is a famous actor!

– Ба́бушка, смотри́, что мой телефо́н уме́ет де́лать!
Ну на́до же!

– Grandma, look what my phone can do!
– Wow!

Пожа́луй, на сего́дня доста́точно. Оставля́ю вас тренирова́ться в обрусе́нии. Задава́йте ва́ши вопро́сы в коммента́риях, я с удово́льствием отве́чу.

Well, I think, that’s enough for today. I leave you to train in Russification. Ask your questions in the comments, I will gladly answer.

До сле́дующей встре́чи!

Until next time!

This is great! Is there anyway to slow the recording down? I know it’s for UI students, but it would be good to have the option)

      Hi Rob,

      Thanks for the comment, appreciated.

At the moment I only record at a normal speed. There was an option to download episodes recorded at a slower speed for a symbolic price as a support for the site, but at some moment I removed it. If there is an interest for that, I can upload them within next couple of weeks.

    thank you so much!
