December 2014 – Long Distance Baking

Kelly has been begging me to post this dip recipe. Partially because she thought you guys would love it. Partially because she wanted the recipe for herself. I can’t really blame her…cause this stuff is delicious! My cousin made it for Christmas Eve a few years back, and we were all very surprised. Not that we didn’t think she would make something good, just that she’d never really cooked before! Not for us anyway. So when she whipped out this Jalapeño Popper Dip we all got in line to try … [Read more…]

If you remember, Kelly and I originally started doing Monthly Musings here on LDB. Once a month we would post our current ramblings or fill you in on life. However as we’ve gotten more in the swing of things with creating and posting recipes regularly, the Monthly Musings have fallen by the wayside. We’ve decided they will now be more of a Quarterly Musings kind of thing. Or basically just whenever we want them 😉 This fall went by so fast, I can’t believe it! Though looking back through … [Read more…]

As promised, I combined whiskey and popcorn. You’re welcome. Ever since I learned how easy it is to make your own microwave popcorn, I’ve been on a huge popcorn kick. It only seemed natural to make caramel corn as Christmas gifts to give out to family and friends. I made a S’mores version for the kids, and decided on this whiskey version for the adults. Because who doesn’t love whiskey? I originally saw this Bourbon Caramel Popcorn by Use Real Butter and knew I wanted to do … [Read more…]

Yellow cake with chocolate frosting- could there be a better cake combination?! As I have previously mentioned in other posts, I am making my best friend’s wedding cake. A wedding cake is a lot of pressure so I want to make sure that it looks legit and not like some last minute cake thrown together. This cake needs to be perfect! I bought some cake decorating tools a few weeks ago and decided this would be a great recipe to practice with. I used Sally’s Baking Addiction Yellow Cupcake … [Read more…]

I love baking homemade goodies for people for Christmas gifts. I know everyone ends up with piles of cookies and chocolates and candies around the holidays…but I can’t help it. I love baking for people! It seems so much more authentic than just buying them more “stuff”. I’m not really sure how I decided popcorn was the theme this year. Maybe it was after I discovered how easy it is to make your own microwave popcorn… I had leftover marshmallows sitting around from the Waldorf … [Read more…]

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! The holidays are always my favorite time of year! Here at Long Distance Baking, we love Christmas. We love it so much in fact, that we’ve been known to listen to Christmas music a couple times throughout the year. Every summer vacation needs at least one listen of Little Dummer Boy and Do You Hear What I Hear. Am I right?? My cousin is a 1st grade teacher and she asked me if we had any kid friendly holiday treats- holiday yummies that are cute … [Read more…]

It just wouldn’t be the holiday season without excessive amounts of cookies, am I right?? My first big holiday baking day included these cookies. Kelly and I have been waiting a year to participate in the Great Food Blogger Cookie Swap…we couldn’t wait to get matched up with other bloggers and get started! The FB Cookie Swap is in it’s fourth year and is hosted by Julie at The Little Kitchen and Lindsay at Love and Olive Oil. The official partner of this year’s swap was Cookies for … [Read more…]

Tis the season for pies! Am I right? I hosted Thanksgiving this year and made three pies (for only 7 people…). That’s almost half a pie per person! With that much pie eating you need a little variety. I have a super easy pie dough recipe that I use for the majority of my pies, but it’s always nice to switch things up. When a coworker requested cheesecake for their birthday treats, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to make a graham cracker crust. Now I know you can just buy a … [Read more…]

It’s December 8th. The Reed Wedding is on May 16th. Today I decided that I really needed to increase my wedding cake practice. Because I’m obviously running out of time… Today I went Christmas shopping. However, I did not buy any gifts. Instead, I bought cake decorating supplies for myself. I promise I’m not a scrooge… Anyway, I bought some really cool tools that I’m super excited about so I thought I would share them with you today! I’ll be sharing the cake I made on Friday 🙂 1. … [Read more…]

I think a love of popcorn is a genetic thing. I mean…I haven’t seen any real research done on the topic, but from my own observations it appears to be true. My mom used to chastise my grandmother for eating popcorn for dinner, but I have it on good authority on nights when my dad is out of town for work, now it’s my own mother who is eating popcorn for dinner. Aaaaand it would be a lie if I pretended I haven’t done the same. It pairs perfectly with red wine, I think that means it is a complete … [Read more…]
