July 2014 – Long Distance Baking

Are you ready for more peaches? You better be! Did you know August is National Peach Month? I totes did, and that’s why I went all peach-crazy this week! Jk…I had no idea. Play along with me and pretend we both knew? The real reason I can’t stop won’t stop with the peaches is because the BF is out of town and he hates peaches. Not just a “Ehh…peaches aren’t my favorite…” it’s a full blown hatred. I know, I know…I don’t get it either! Since he’s not here I’m hoarding all the peach treats … [Read more…]

I. Love. Peach. Cobbler. It’s the best. As much as I love chocolate, peach cobbler may just be my favorite dessert! Maybe it’s because I only get to eat it a few times each year, it seems more special. When most people go camping they roast hot dogs or bbq. When we go camping…we eat things like frittatas, tamale pie, fresh biscuits and peach cobbler. Always peach cobbler. Let’s just say my dad is the dutch oven master! There is nothing better than sitting around the fire eating piping … [Read more…]

I know, I know. I’m wayyyy behind on the popsicle bandwagon. I tried making some rum and coke popsicles last summer and had such high hopes! Until they didn’t set up (note to self…don’t try making popsicles so strong you can get drunk off them…) and they just tasted…blah. I’m not sure if I didn’t have the lids on tight and they got other freezer smells in them or what, but it was a disaster. But like with all mishaps, you just have to try again. Sometimes it’s just over a year later. Has … [Read more…]

Aren’t these mini pie pans so cute?!? They were a gift from Grandma Vi and although she is technically not my grandma, I love her like one anyway. She sent them to me over a month ago and I know it’s a shame I haven’t used them until now but it’s just because I couldn’t decide what kind of pies to bake! I’ve been wanting to make apple pie with a crumb topping and then eat it piping hot with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream (my favorite flavor of vanilla, btw) but the heat has been a … [Read more…]

We were very excited and honored when Liz from Floating Kitchen nominated us for a Liebster Award! A Liebster Award is passed from one blogger to another, typically those who are “newer” bloggers, and it is a way for us to get to know each other and for our readers to get to know us. It’s kind of a “tag, you’re it!” kind of thing. We tell you a little about ourselves, answer the questions from Liz, nominate more bloggers, then ask them questions! It was so fun to learn more about Liz and have an … [Read more…]

Guys, I finally made banana cream pie! When I lived in LA, my friends and I would sometimes go to this whole in wall pie place called The Apple Pan. It’s a tiny old-fashioned burger joint with only one giant U-shaped bar for seating and they are known for their pie. Their apple pie is delicious (although I’m still partial to apple pie from Apple Hill but that could be for sentimental reasons) but it’s their banana cream pie that really stood out to me! I never even had banana cream pie until I … [Read more…]

Making jam sounds like a very labor intensive and scary process, better left to Laura Ingalls Wilder and cute little old ladies…am I right? WRONG! At least for freezer jam. It is so amazingly easy!! No more making excuses. You need to make this. This was my summer project as a kid. My parents decided since I was the one eating all the jam that I needed to be the one making it (My sister had to do the pickles for the same reason).  Somehow, though, I had forgotten about making freezer … [Read more…]

Happy Monday! Today I am going to take you on a tour of my hometown: Elk Grove, California! Steph and I were approached by this awesome company called RelayRides to highlight the gems in our hometowns. RelayRides is a ride share program. So if you wanted to fly into Sacramento International Airport and drive to Elk Grove for the weekend, because after this post you will, you can rent a car from individuals who list their cars to rent. It’s a really awesome travel tool and one that I will … [Read more…]

Just a quick question here: how many of you can find Idaho on a map? (And no, Idaho is not Iowa. And yes, people have asked me that). Kelly and I love to travel and share our vacations with you all, but over the next few days we’re going to share with you our homes. And mine, is Idaho. I bet you’d be surprised to hear that Boise’s nickname is “The City of Trees”, because you probably think it should be “City of Potatoes” or something like that. Not alllll the stereotypes are true, though … [Read more…]

Guys, I debated whether or not to post this. I mean, nobody wants to highlight a failure or showcase a bad idea. But in the spirit of blog transparency and to show that just because you have a baking blog doesn’t mean you always get the recipe right, I’m sharing it. Really, it’s all to help you not make the same mistake as me. You’re welcome 🙂 I had such high hopes this past weekend of creating a gluten-free, dairy-free biscuit. That right there should have been enough to steer me away and … [Read more…]
