May 2015 – Long Distance Baking

This post is sponsored by Blue Diamond Almonds. Every year my family (my big family of aunts, uncles, and cousins) rents a beach house for a week in Aptos, CA. It’s amazing and wonderful and fun! Some of my favorite childhood memories are from the beach house and even though we see our extended family on a fairly regular basis, it’s nice to enjoy each other’s company for week at the beach! Since we all stay in one beach house, that we’ve dubbed The Beach House, everyone contributes money … [Read more…]

My grandmother once told me that ice cream “is just milk, cream, and sugar- it’s really not that bad for you, Kelly.” I chose to believe her and as a result, I liberally consume ice cream on a regular basis. Thanks, Mimi, for justifying my love of ice cream. Now, I can’t entirely blame my grandmother for my love of ice cream. I also blame our local, go-to ice cream shop- Leatherby’s. Hands down, they have the best ice cream around the Sacramento area (although, nothing beats Mint Chip from … [Read more…]

Sophomore year Mrs. Ehresman’s English class, I was randomly paired with a girl named Katie to write a “get to know your neighbor” type poem. That day we both happened to be wearing orange shirts so naturally our poem began with “we’re both wearing orange shirts.” (I know, we clearly have a knack for poetry…) We have been best friends ever since. Here is a stroll down memory lane of our friendship over the years: Last weekend she married a great guy (oh hey, Marcus!) in a beautiful … [Read more…]

Where has the time gone…can you believe May is over halfway over?! Guess that’s what happens when you spend it packing and moving across the country. With June just around the corner (and unaccustomed to the humidity of Louisiana) I’m already looking forward to summer smoothies and cold drinks! Last summer I got in the habit of freezing extra fruit for this very reason, but of course didn’t bother to do anything with them until now. I’m also not a fan of green smoothies, so I kept … [Read more…]

Once upon a time I made Angel Food Cake. And it was delectable and not nearly as difficult as I imagined. So I decided to make them in cupcake form. Because anything miniature is infinitely cuter. Within one week at work we had a retirement party for two of our radiology nurses (a combined 84 years of nursing at our hospital!), a coworker’s birthday, and my going away party. Aka a whole lotta treats. I made a Honey Yogurt Fruit Dip for one of the parties and had leftover berries, so I … [Read more…]

If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll know that I am baking a wedding cake for my friend’s wedding this Saturday. You will have also noticed that I hosted my cousin’s bridal shower this past weekend! It was so much fun planning and preparing with my mom and aunts that I thought I would share some pics on the blog! The theme was “Stock the Kitchen” and one of the things I asked guests to do was submit a recipe so I could make a cookbook for Lis and her fiancé- their first family cookbook! … [Read more…]

When I was in middle school there was a locally owned coffee shop across the street, Plantation Coffee, that we used to go to all the time, especially when my grandparents would pick us up. They had the best blueberry scones! In fact, I have yet to find a scone that was that good. Over the course of this blog I have attempted scones quite a few times. Obviously by the fact that I have only posted one recipe, they haven’t turned out. I’m still bummed those banana scones I made were a bust … [Read more…]

Seven Layer Bars. Seven Layer Magic Cookie Bars. Magic Bars. It doesn’t matter what you call them. They’re some of the most delicious and easiest bars to make. I actually never even knew what their name was. I’ve seen them at various parties and cookie swaps over the years, and I always eat them, but I never knew what they were. Guess I was too busy shoveling them in my face to worry about it. For the layers you start with a graham cracker crust, topped with nuts, all the best baking … [Read more…]
